Who Cares What Others Think?

what-others-thinkEveryone has encountered someone who could care less what other people think of them.

In social situations, they can be like a blast furnace to a snowman, even though they may be wonderful people in other aspects. Additionally, they may be the source of a great deal of discomfort.

You may still be envious of them in some respects. Oh, the freedom to live without concern for the opinions of others, or even to care at all!

However, balance is actually what we seek. Being “emotionally intelligent” means that we should be aware of what other people might be thinking about us, but not so much that it gets in the way of being who we really are.

One of my colleague Mark’s clients bemoaned the fact that he had felt he could not accomplish his goals for fifty years. Fearing that his family would think less of him if he pursued his musical passion, he had entered the family business. He had never taken charge of his life and accomplished his goals.

“What would you really like to do, John?” was the ten million dollar question Mark posed to him. After a moment of hesitation and doubt, he smiled shyly and then more broadly, saying, “You know, now that the kids are grown, the wife and I would love to follow our dream of retiring to Spain and opening a small hotel.”

“What’s stopping you?”

“The same thing that always has: fear of what other people think.”

All sorts of shallow behavior, embarrassment, lost opportunities, inner resentments, regret, and even bitterness stem from worrying about what other people think.

What’s stopping you?

Our download ‘Care Less What Others Think’ is one I use from time to time when I find myself worrying just a little too much.

To your caring just a little less and living your own life more,
