Speaking With A Powerful Voice Makes A Difference

Powerfully speaking to a large group or just among a few people. It makes a difference.

Speaking in a certain way can make a big difference can make a big difference in how you’re perceived.

You might have wondered why people who attend job interviews that they don’t really care about tend to do better than those that really want the job? Perhaps you didn’t realize that was the case. But it’s true.

We know the reason for it is related to speaking with confidence. But are there concrete examples of it?

The sound of status

Research published in the journal Psychological Science has found that people pick up on vocal cues to tell them who’s in charge (1). Apparently, and this may come as no surprise, a person that speaks with confidence will signal other attributes to those that are listening.

In one interesting experiment, two groups of students read outloud the same passage of text that was written as a negotiation but it was fictional.

The first group was asked to imagine that they had inside information or a high workplace status as they were speaking.

The second group was asked to imagine the opposite. Speaking as if they had no inside information or a low rank in the workplace.

As you might expect, there was a clear difference between the groups.

When a third group listened to recordings of the students’ that had been speaking, they were able to distinguish between those who had been given a high or low rank.
